PC and proud (and not fucking off to Australia)

Poor old Dover Samuels is a confused old man. He’s the Kiwi equivalent of Mr Costanza, George’s dad out of Seinfeld. His parliamentary career is over, and before he retires to the Kiwi equivalent of Florida – the Sunshine Coast in Australia, he’s having one last groan.

But about what I’m not exactly sure, and he certainly isn’t either. There’s some gobbledegook about raising the flag every day in schools and bowing down at the old soldiers whom we are eternally grateful for. There’s something about the Treaty, but considering his Govt was responsible for one hell of a large modern grievance (Foreshore and Seabed), I can’t understand his rationale there. There’s also something about laughing at ourselves, because we don’t because we are all too bloody PC these days.

Hmm, last time I looked it wasn’t PC not to laugh at the handicapped, or the racially different or anyone else, it’s just common decency. His and anyone’s claims that the ‘PC Brigade’ are strangling this country is vacuous. What exactly is PC, and what exactly are your gripes? Those who fling PC around in a derogatory manner are the very same people whom use “common sense” without exactly knowing what they are saying – or lacking the conviction to say what they really mean, which is often something stupidly racist, sexist or putting someone down to make themselves feel good.

But the funniest statement came at the end of his rant.

“He said it was high time Kiwis simply saw themselves as New Zealanders.”

but then contradicted himself with…

“I will never be an Australian; this place is my home.”

So what’s it to be Dover. Are the Sri Lankans, English, Polish, Pacific Islanders all to become New Zealanders and yet you are not to be an Australian.

Once again a bloody politician is so bloody vain as to not realise, that the sound of their own voice is no reason to say anything that comes to mind. In this case nothing came to mind but he still wanted to sound like he was saying something.

To be PC is to have the conviction to shut up, when there is nothing to say.
