Did he really say that.

Quick game.

Who said the following about Barack Obama on the radio today. Here’s a clue, it wasn’t ultra conservative right wing fuck heads out of America.

“I don’t consider him a Black Man”

This was supposedly made in the context of talking about the psychology of who you vote for. You see this radio station spends as much time talking about the US election and beating down Obama, you’d think we were in the US and that it really mattered to us. Apparently there’s a race and gender issue with regard to who people vote for in America (of course there is, the KKK still exists), so this presenter was trying to talk about correlations with that here in NZ?

Anyway this presenter is described as the following;

“Urbane and smooth, Leighton Smith delivers the most intelligent talkback radio around. His ease with developing in-depth, meaningful conversation brings an extra dimension to this predominantly talkback programme. Leighton’s love of wine, food and music are also featured in this programme.”

That’s right folks, our resident right wing tosser doesn’t consider Senator Obama a Black Man. Technically he’s correct in that he’s of immediate Kenyan-US descent, not your typical African American lineage true. But what Leighton was getting at is that Senator Obama as past president of the Harvard Law Review, with a privileged background and job doesn’t fit with our stereotypes of black men in America, you know the Footballer, the rapper, the gangbanger or the criminal – that sort of black man.

God help us.

Anyway go to the Newstalk ZB and have a look at the presenters page – absolutely bloody priceless to use a phrase. That’s one helluva small sample of the NZ population, white middle aged well to do men.

Do you really talk of Senator Obama in those terms? He’s Black, you can’t just say “I don’t consider this man to be black”? Can you, all too uncomfortable for me, but then I can’t stand Newstalk ZB, it’s become the NZ version of those nasty stations in the US, and I’m a touchy feely-PC-pinko-commie.

  1. Excellent piece! NewstalkZB’s a blight on radio but they webcast sports so I’m forced to listen to hear the rugby.

  2. And if I wasn’t related to Murray Deaker, I’d be having lots of fun with them. But then are they worth it.
